Hi everyone! I am new to this community and loving what I'm already learning about what it takes to run a household/maintain a responsible lifestyle efficiently and creatively. I hope that I won't be a lurker (as is my tendency) but that I will feel comfortable asking questions and making suggestions.

My name is:
Freya

My age is:
22

I live in:
Los Angeles, California, USA

My relationship status is:
single

I live in a:
condo with two amazing housemates!

My children/pets:
none

My obsession of the moment is:
crocheting granny squares and baking

My favorite "guilty pleasure" is:
drinking hot chocolate with whipped cream while snuggled under a warm blanket with a book on a cold fall/winter day

My favorite domestic activity is:
baking or cleaning (much like [info]soph_nyc, I do not enjoy the actual act of cleaning but the satisfaction gained from order and cleanliness)

The domestic chore I hate:
cleaning.

Are you a beginner domestic diva or an experienced pro?:
Beginner. I just entered the real world from my sheltered college bubble.

I found this community through: looking up "Martha Stewart" in the Interests section of LJ. HAHA.

My favorite recipe is: I can't find it right now, but a delicious Mediterranean quinoa vegetable stew. Easy and delicious!

I look forward to learning from all of you!

I fixed it!!! [Dec. 12th, 2009|11:24 am]

domesticity

[elusivecallie]
I'm very proud of myself, and i think you guys are the only ones who will appreciate why...

They had sweet potatoes on sale at the grocery store this week. So i decided to get some and run them through the dehydrator for the dogs. I got the potatoes sliced, everything arranged, and turned the dehydrator on. It started making this horrible noise. I don't know how to fix things, so i did what i always do, bang on it. This didn't do anything. I'm not mechanically inclined. My boyfriend can fix anything, so i've never really had to learn. If stuff breaks, i say "honey, can you fix it?", he fixes it, and it's all better.

The potatoes have to run in the dehydrator for a few hours. The boyfriend is out of town this weekend. I didnt' want to wait till sunday night/monday. The potatoes are already cut, and i'm not staying up to ridiculous o'clock sunday night so i can be around to flip the potatoes over and rotate the trays. If i don't do it this weekend, its not going to happen, and i'll have to toss the potatoes. But the noise really was awful, and i was sure that if i just ran it anyway, either i'd go crazy, or the dehydrator would blow up. But, i'm a big girl. I don't usually fix things, but i'm not a total idiot. I could have sat and waited around for a big strong guy to fix it for me. I'm a domestic diva. The dehydrator is clearly kitchen related, and the kitchen is my domain.

So, i went and i got a screwdriver. This is a dangerous thing for me to have. Screwdrivers are used to take things apart.

I took my dehydrator apart. This is not something i can usually be trusted to do, and not break somthing. But the dehydrator was old, and new ones are cheap. I figured the worst i could do was break something that was already broken. But, i took it apart, poked at things for a minute, and realized that the fan blades were rubbing. Turns out after all the uses, and the heat, the plastic fan blades had drooped a little bit, and were rubbing (hence the awful noise). I bent them back up, put everything back (with no extra pieces left over!), didnt lose any screws, and the best part is.....

When i turned it back on, nothing exploded! And now it's running nicely, purring along quietly in the kitchen like it's supposed to, and the dogs will have their treats tonight after all.

Cupcakes [Dec. 11th, 2009|07:03 pm]

domesticity

[modern_saints]
My Mom's coworker's daughter is turning three next week and they are having her birthday party tomorrow. My mom asked me to make some cupcakes for the party. They had Olivia (the birthday girl) pick up the cupcakes she wanted from the Hello Cupcake book. She picked the pretty princess cupcakes which were actually a bitch to make my Mom and I tried to make them a few weeks ago and it didn't work out. The book makes the dresses from rolled out spice drop candies covered in colored sugar but I have no idea how the book did it since all the spice drops did were stick to each other and form a blob. So these are my interpretation of princess cupcakes.

Princesses! )

Crocheting... [Dec. 9th, 2009|03:17 pm]

[urban_quilter]
I've never learned how to crochet, but often, when I see someone's products, I wished that I knew how!

Does anyone have any good "crochet for dummies" type books (or IS there a Crochet for Dummies book?) lol

Thanks for your help everyone! :)
